AVID is a program that takes students with the potential and determination to go to college and places them in the rigorous courses required to get into those four year universities.
The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:
- Will succeed in challenging, rigorous curriculum,
- Will complete a college prep path,
- Will be well-rounded students and involved in school activities,
- Will apply and be accepted to four-year colleges, and
- Will become educated, responsible citizens.
AVID believes:
- that we serve our students first;
- that all students should have the opportunity to go to college;
- that all students will achieve at the highest levels if challenged and supported;
- in raising expectations;
- that any obstacle can be overcome with individual determination, and support;
- that we can change a student’s future-one at a time.
All students will work as a team, participate in community service, and develop skills that make them stronger students.
All AVID students will be in the AVID elective for one period a day where they are taught the skill sets (solid notetaking, organization, public speaking, responsibility). In that class they will focus on four cornerstones of the AVID curriculum, WICR: writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. Twice a week they will participate in tutorials, where they bring academic questions to be worked on in groups of their peers with the assistance of college tutors. Students also have opportunities to visit college campuses to feel the “environment” and help them make a confident decision for college.
More specifically, these topics are a main focus of the elective class.

The program creates an atmosphere of positive peer encouragement for the students, so that they are pushing each other to strive for success rather than perpetuating failure. The AVID curriculum is designed to get students to ask higher level, thought provoking questions which will in turn cause them to focus on the “why” behind the facts.
The AVID Program began at Northeast in 2006, and has been a strong program in various states all over the country since 1980.
